How To Set Up A Laptop Wireless Connection
All laptops available in the market nowadays provide wireless support either internally or externally. Going wireless means that we can work from anywhere in the campus of a school, university, organization or an office without the need to plug in to a wired network. We need to follow certain steps to get a laptop wireless connection for our homes as well.
Network Configuration For Wireless Home Connection:
A wireless connection to the laptop could be made at your home as well. This could be done by installing the wireless setup in our home. Let us study the installation of a wireless connection for homes.
Suppose that we have a wireless enabled laptop at home. Now we want to set up a wireless environment in our home. For it we would need a cable or DSL modem, computers with wireless network adapter cards for all those places from where we want to access our network and a wireless gateway which has four wired network ports.
The home network has a multi-mode gateway that works with the built-in 802.11b standard that comes in laptops these days. A name needs to be allotted to our home network. This name is called Service Set Identifier (SSID). It is case sensitive and hence should be typed in with care. This name is for unique identification of the network. But this name should not be the default service set identifier name provided by the manufacturers. Having a different SSID can make the wireless network secures. Now after naming the network, first connect the cable modem to the gateway and then insert the gateway to the home network by following certain steps. This could be done directly by connecting the laptop to the gateway using a web browser. At this point it is also important to set the SSID for network protection. After we have set the service set identifier on our home gateway, it is needed to add to a network list which is preferred. For this either the wireless auto configuration option of Windows XP should be enabled or this could also be done manually. Security Factor For Our Home Wireless Network:
For security purposes, after we have connected are laptop to our home network, it is advised to disable the SSID broadcast option from the wireless gateways configuration tool. Another way could be to limit the scope of exposure of our wireless connection to others. This can be done by allowing only specific network cards to connect to our connection. These virtual private networks allow connection to our network even from hot spots or public access point. However, there can be, at times, security issues associated with these Hot Spots. Thus, a wireless home network connection for laptops could easily be made possible.
